Men and Eating Disorders

When we think of eating disorders we usually think of them and how they relate to young women. Most people who have eating disorders tend to be white, straight, and female. Of course, males suffer from eating disorders but it’s a much smaller number compared to the women who suffer from the disease.

It may or not come as a surprise to know that many men also suffer from eating disorders. In fact young males are the fastest growing demographic when it comes to eating disorders.

Eating disorders come about for a number of reasons including behavioral, biological, psychological, emotional and social factors. Today’s you male is faced with more and more body image issues than ever before.

Research has shown that in many communities the male body is objectified in a similar fashion to the way a woman’s body is in the general population. When one’s body doesn’t measure up it can lead to feelings of body shame.

Many factors can contribute to an eating disorder and the ones that women experience are similar to the ones their male counterparts experience. Sexual ambivalence, insecurity, being bombarded with images of what a sexy male looks like… If a young male doesn’t have the physique that he believes is desired he may easily develop an eating disorder. Because the many communities place so much emphasis and importance on a fit and attractive body that pressure may be too much for someone already dealing with issues of low self esteem. Not measuring up for a young male may have just taken steps to join, may push him into developing an eating disorder in order to feel worthy.
